How Many Senior High Schools are in Ghana?

There are 722 Public Senior High Schools in Ghana as of 2020 (including 47 Public Technical/ Vocational Institutions), 308 Private Senior High Schools, 152 Private Technical/ Vocational Institutions
In total, Ghana has about 1,182 Senior High schools distributed across various categories and across public and privately owned schools.
Grouping of Senior High Schools (Categories)
The Ghana Education Service, categorizes schools based on several factors, including but not limited to infrastructure, WASSCE performance over the years, regional balance, and locations.
According to GES, all second cycle institutions, whether publicly or privately owned, are grouped into categories as summarized below:
- Public or Government Senior High Schools are grouped into four: Categories A, B, C, and D.
- Category E comprises Public Second Cycle institutions that offer pure Technical & Vocational programmes.
- Private Senior High Schools offering non-technical & vocational programmes are grouped into Category F.
- Category G is made of Private Technical & Vocational Institutions.
Updates Added in 2020
The GES added some new updates to the schools register in the categorization of the schools. These are as follows:
- All Technical/ Vocational Institutions have been categorised into A, B, and C, and added to the list of SHS/ SHTS.
- Category E comprises all 2nd Cycle Schools (SHS) that offer Technical/ Vocational Programmes
